It happened to me few times. I turn on my VTT2 and see no charts-only 'empty' desktop. I have to use again default settings to have any charts/quotes(losig my old settings). Today it happened again and this time I could not even import environment(I already saved it last time). Are you familiar with it?

Hello,

What do you exactly by "empty desktop"? Can you please elaborate? Also, is the environment you're trying to import from created in a version of VT Trader prior to 2.0? Additionally, it may be helpful to know what version/build # of VT Trader you're using, its installation method (normal or portable), and what Windows OS you're running. Thank you.

Hello Chris,

I am using VTT2 (2.0.4.2)-desktop. I have WinXP. Files made in VTT2.

What I mean by that? Normally I have 2 charts open. They are "free"(undocked). This situation happened to me 3 times and when it happens all my charts(and quotes board) disappear. I do not know how to explain it better.

So normally I have 3 windows open in my Windowssystem(I mean "bottom tab" next to "start"-I do not know how to call it in English). One for whole VTT2 desktop, and two other for charts. When it happens I got only one window in this group-for desktop(empty).

Hello,

Are you closing the chart windows before you exit VT Trader? Or, are you shutting down VT Trader after a disconnection before it has the chance to successfully reconnect?

Regards,
Chris

I think I close it normally. Problem is when I start VT2 again. It happened few times and I did not expect it-so I was not paying much attention to what has been done before. but I am pretty sure I did everyting OK.

Here is what I see in such situation-see file.

Thanks.

Hello,

That's what VT Trader looks like after using the "Close All Windows" command. Did you use any command like that before exiting VT Trader the last time you logged out? Additionally, did this happen after a disconnection/reconnection event?

I really don't remember Chris. I think NOT, but who knows. I will take a closer look at it next time. Thanks

Hello,

Thank you. It's important that if you report a bug that you keep a detailed description of exactly what happened and, most importantly, how it happened. In order to fix an issue, we have to be able to duplicate it.

Hello Chris,

I just wanted to chime in here. I've lost my custom template twice now.
The first time this happend I was simply dragging a window to be docked onto top window frame. When I released my mouse button, my entire template had vanished. What I cannot recall is whether the template was restored correctly once VT2 was restarted( I believe it was). I was too busy at the time to make a note.

The second time it happened I was clicking very fast between docked windows and it just vanished giving me an empty main window as shown in posts above.
At this point I had created 2 additional backup templates, so that I can quickly keep working.

This is an example of my template setup.

Sorry for the lack of detailed information, I was too busy at the time of this occurance.

Thanks as always, for the help!

Hi Scott,

Would you be willing to provide us with a copy of your template that you've experienced this issue with? Also, what OS are you currently using? Thank you.

Hello,

As an update, I was just notified that our docking library vendor has updated the docking library and fixed a few critical issues. A bug that is likely responsible for this 'vanishing workspace' issue seems to have been fixed along with some other bugs. We'll be updating the docking engine to use their newest version not in the upcoming release (due very, very soon), but I believe in the release following that one.

Os is Vista 32bit.

And yes I can provide you with a copy of the template if you wouldn't mind giving me instructions on how to upload.
Also I'm just curious as to what information is stored within the template?? Sorry I've been plagued with an insatiable curiosity for how things work, all my life! (I sometimes get into alot of trouble as a result) smile.gif

Hi Scott,

At this point, I don't think we need it. I read through the release notes provided by the vendor we purchased our docking library from and it appears that this issue stems from an issue in the docking engine directly (i.e. it's not something we would have likely been able to fix; it would have to be fixed by the library vendor and it appears it has been).

In regards to what's included in the desktop, generally speaking, I assume it's all of the open windows' coordinates, information about the docking arrangement, any custom properties being used by the charts and trading windows, attached indicators, trading systems, drawing objects, etc. More or less, everything you "see" in VT Trader related to the window arrangements and their properties.

So, if there is a fix via the vendor, we will not see this update in the next VT2 release?

Wouldn't the templates be sort of incomplete without the actual indicators and TS's referenced in the desktop file itself not being loaded on the test system??( assuming the template was uploaded to you guys)

Thanks Chris,

No. Our next release was already too far into development. I just found out about the new library version being available this morning. The next VT Trader release was supposed to be released yesterday, but it was postponed until this coming Monday (unless it gets postponed again).

The lead VT Trader developer told me that updated docking library should get included in the 'next' VT Trader release (the one following the upcoming one).

This would only be the case if they were custom indicators and/or trading systems. Any custom trading systems or indicators referenced by a template should be provided along with the template if you want to share the template with another VT Trader user. Otherwise, those indicators or trading systems would not load in the imported template.

However, in this case, I don't think we need your template. Knowing the updating docking library is available and a bug was fixed that appears to cause behavior like you described, the developers and QA wouldn't perform any tests until after the updated docking library was implemented anyway.

Chris, I want to get back to this issue again. Just a minute go I lost all my windows again. I was on LIVE account..I did logout and login to DEMO...then logout from it and I did login to LIVE again but there was no charts and windows. Only main panel(empty).

There is definitely something wrong with windows/desktops related issues. I just LOGIN and LOGOUT -did not close anything and still...

Hi disi,

What version of VT Trader are you using now? Also, can you provide us a copy of your desktop workspace that this happened to (after you've set it back up like it was previously)? I've asked QA to investigate. Thank you.

Hello Chris,

I always use the latest version of VTT...whenever it is launched.
DarrenW
This is nuts!! In the last 3 days I've saved COUNTLESS backups of both my desktop workspace and environments...on thumb drives, external HD's and my PC and Laptop HD...

Every 3 log in's or so VT2 totally dumps my enironment/chart set up. I NEVER, NEVER close out ANY of my charts before exiting...usually they are up when I re-open VT2...but today VT2 will not load ANY of my files from ANY of my backups (I mean what a waste of time to backup all those files). attached is error message I get when trying to "switch" views.

What operating system are you using? Also, are you using the "Import Environment" feature to import your desktops every time you load VT Trader? Also, were your desktops created in a version of VT Trader prior to VT 2.0?

Regards,
Chris
DarrenW
Vista Home Basic...no I don't use the import environment feature everytime I load VT...I do when I log into VT2 after having left it loaded the way I want and then it's not...then yes I do try to "switch" to my charts but I get that error message...then If I delete that environment and try to load it from a back up location..I get the same error.

VT2.0 is the first and only VT I've ever downloaded and used.

By the way, just for fun I downloaded and installed VT2 from the CMS website today on my wifes laptop same set up as mine vista basic. I then downloaded from BOTH my email and a thumbdrive the exact 2 environment files I've been using all week and I got the same message!

Crazy! I hope you can help me out!! I am going to go insane customizing my elaborate setups repeatedly.

Thanks

Darren

Hello,

Would you please upload 1 or both of the environment files that seem to be giving you these errors? I'd like to have our QA dept. thoroughly investigate this issue.

Thank you.

Thanks Darren,

I forgot one question, during the import environment process how are you telling VT Trader to handle duplicate files? Ignore, rename, or replace?

I'll pass these over to the QA group.

Chris
cskidmore
Hi Darren,

QA and one of the developers has investigated this report. They mentioned that you're using "." (period) in your desktop workspace name(s). This is causing the problem (even though VT Trader let you do it; we'll fix that in a future release). In the meantime, you need to rename each of your desktop workspaces so that they do not contain any periods in their names. You can rename the .vtenv file to a .zip file, open the .zip file, and rename the files in it accordingly. Then, rename it back to .vtenv and VT Trader should import the files properly.

Regards,
Chris
DarrenW
Wow, I feel like an idiot now! LOL.

Thanks I can't believe I did that!
cskidmore
VT Trader 2.0.19, 2.0.21, and 2.0.23.4 address several issues that could lead to VT Trader crashing or ending up with empty workspaces. The . (period) in workspace names being allowed is still an issue, unfortunately.
cskidmore
As a follow-up, I found out this morning that it's now acceptable to use a period in the desktop workspace name; it will no longer cause any issues. This was resolved in VT Trader 2.0.20. So, closing topic.
